Federal Offsets should be reported to the General Accounting Office

This is a reminder to contact the General Accounting Office (GAO) if a Federal offset occurs.  Federal offsets happen when any state agency has an unpaid Federal debt, as offsets are identified by the Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN). The collection method is generally to reduce the next federal draw request that is in line, regardless of the state agency making the request. Often the State does not receive any prior notification that this type of action will take place. If you happen to receive a notice from a Federal agency indicating there is an amount owed, please send GAO a copy as soon as possible so that we may work to resolve the debt prior to the offset.  If there is an offset, please contact the GAO at [email protected] so that we may gather detailed information necessary to resolve the matter.
